5 Questions You Should Ask Before Rhinoplasty

rhinoplasty in Chicago

Before undergoing rhinoplasty (a nose job), it’s critical to know as much as possible about your plastic surgeon’s experience and what you can expect from the procedure. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Ellis discusses what you should ask a doctor prior to rhinoplasty.

1. How Many Rhinoplasties Have You Performed?

Rhinoplasties are among the most popular cosmetic surgeries, but some plastic surgeons perform them more frequently than others. You certainly want someone who performs rhinoplasties regularly and has a wealth of experience. Look for a board-certified plastic surgeon who has gone through the specialized training necessary to receive certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Ask for before-and-after photos of recent rhinoplasties and see if you like the results. Keep an eye out for patients whose noses are similar to yours for an idea of how your new nose might look.

2. What Percentage of Your Rhinoplasties Require Revisions?

What happens if you aren’t happy with the rhinoplasty results? Plastic surgeons have different revision policies. On average, surgical revision ranges from 5% to 15% of all rhinoplasties, so you want a surgeon whose rate is on the lower end. Keep in mind that revisions are more complicated procedures than initial rhinoplasties.

3. Do You Specialize in Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

If you are not of Caucasian descent, it is likely you want a rhinoplasty that takes your ethnic heritage into account. There are structural differences in the noses of those of varying ethnic backgrounds, but the traditional “nose job” is still geared towards Caucasians. Plastic surgeons specializing in ethnic rhinoplasty have training in specific techniques. Ask what percentage of the surgeon’s practice consists of ethnic rhinoplasties.

4. What Results Can I Expect From My Rhinoplasty?

Have a frank discussion with the surgeon about the results you desire versus achievable results. It is crucial that every patient understands exactly what they can expect from their rhinoplasty. Patients must prove they are realistic about what rhinoplasty can do for them. While the surgery should improve the appearance of your nose, recreating the nose of a celebrity on your face is not always feasible.

5. What Is the Recovery Process?

Rhinoplasty recovery does not happen overnight. Ask the surgeon about their post-operative instructions so that you understand exactly what to expect after the surgery.
