Two of the most sought-after surgical procedures are breast augmentation and breast lift. If you are not satisfied with the size, shape, and/or appearance of your breasts, then you may be wondering what procedure is right for you. Here, renowned Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Ellis discusses breast augmentation and breast lift to help you understand your surgical options.
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases breast size and shape using an implant. Patients may pursue breast implants if they are dissatisfied with their breast size or if they have lost breast volume as a result of having kids and breast-feeding. Breast augmentation can also address moderate to severe breast asymmetry.
Dr. Ellis tailors every breast augmentation procedure to the patient’s needs and goals. Prior to the procedure, he meets with the patient to discuss implant options and desired results. If you want fuller breasts, then breast augmentation may be right for you.
Breast lift is a surgical procedure to improve the position of the breasts. During the procedure, excess skin is removed, and the surrounding tissue is reshaped to raise the breast. The nipple position is also raised to a higher location and the areola may be reduced to match the new breast shape. A breast lift does not change the size of your breasts.
Patients may pursue breast lift for a variety of reasons. Over time, as breast tissue and skin lose elasticity, a woman’s breasts may lose perkiness and begin to sag. Breast changes can be caused by pregnancy, nursing, fluctuations in weight and genetics. All of this can result in breasts that look flat, shapeless, and/or droopy. If you are not satisfied with the position of your breasts, then a breast lift may be right for you.
What’s Right for You?
What is right for you depends on your individual wants and needs. Breast augmentation can give you larger breasts but cannot improve breast position. A breast lift can improve breast position but does not increase breast size.
What if you want breasts that are both larger and perkier? Then a combination breast lift-breast augmentation procedure may be right for you.
